How to incorporate sustainable design and production into your retail displays

To accompany our Sustainability Initiative, we’re showcasing the most effective ways retailers can incorporate sustainable design and fabrication into their retail displays.

Sustainability is more important than ever before. Conscious consumers are on the rise, they are searching for extra meaning in the products they purchase. If your product, initiative or brand can make a real difference you need to communicate this with maximum impact.

Your retail space is a billboard for your brand and product. Use this platform to tell your sustainability stories in a highly visible way. A strong message cuts through the noise when told in a bold, authentic and surprising way.

We collaborated with Anya Hindmarch on a simple, but incredibly impactful window display which shone a light on the impact of single-use plastic with a powerful message which went beyond words.

I am a Plastic Bag is a revolutionary collection from Anya Hindmarch, manufactured from recycled plastic bottles that are spun into yarn to produce a canvas that feels like cotton.

To amplify the message of the product, StudioXAG worked with Anya to create a unique spectacle, filling their London Stores with thousands of recycled plastic bottles. The decision to close 3 key London stores over London Fashion Week ensured the message was guaranteed to get noticed.

In keeping with the sustainability message, we took an innovative approach to constructing the installation, choosing to hire rather than produce new materials for the project. The secret structure hidden beneath the bottles ensured that we needed to use much less recycled bottles than meets the eye.

All of the items were returned once the installation finished resulting in an almost zero-waste project. The only element that we had to produce were the window graphics, these were fabricated with eco-friendly inks printed onto a completely PVC-free material.

The bottles were collected by the employees at Anya Hindmarch, First Mile, Grundon Waste Management, Paper Round and The Crown Estate, and were recycled once the installation had finished.

All items were sourced within a 40 mile radius, and StudioXAG offset the carbon generated during transportation + installation of the windows.
