Celebrating the opening of UAL’s Arts Gallery, StudioXAG were invited to curate, design and build a show featuring work from the University’s 2010 graduates.

Defining a theme based on selected work submitted for the show we imagined a surreal scene with two giant articulated hands orchestrating a tea party inside a shoebox.

Using craft materials to replicate interior architecture, from the herringbone floor to the traditional fireplace and sash windows complete with shutters, emphasis was put on this being a model scaled-up.

Playful shifts in scale are a running theme, including the matchbox table complete with matchsticks for legs, and creates a whimsical environment to showcase an eclectic selection of design pieces.

We invited visitors to travel through the installation, exploring the pieces close up, whilst becoming participants in the scene, joining the spectacle as seen through the galleries’ 12m long plate glass windows.
